The Window and the Grid in Luiz Zerbini and Ana Calzavara’s Painting

The paper addresses the painting of Brazilians Luiz Zerbini and Ana Calzavara, especially works that display the motif of “view through an open window”, with the aim of discussing the peculiar effect of spatial ambiguity – the alternation between deep, shallow and decorative space – visible in this production. It suggests, in view of the stylistic pluralism of contemporary art, that artists achieved such an effect by considering the view through an open window as a motif that favors the meeting of different pictorial prototypes, that of the Albertian window and that of the modernist grid. As a way of investigating the question raised, the text adopts the analysis of the “poietics/poetics” of Zerbini and Calzavara.
