The investigation was carried out with family members, who sit on boards of family associations in the mental health services and who are for or against the psychiatric reform ongoing in the country. Attempts were made to understand the social reality of these associations and to identify the families' concepts about care, as well as the reasons that led them to get organized in associations with such distinct approaches. The study was based on the theoretical framework of dialectic historical materialism. Discourse analysis revealed that it is within the associations that the families find the necessary cooperation and support to care for and live with mental patients.Downloads
