Abstract

In order to deal directly with drug addiction, relatives of chemically dependent patients face many difficulties. The family plays an important role on the patient's support and co-dependence behavior is constantly present in their life and may interfere on mental health. This study aims to identify how co-dependence is expressed among relatives of chemically dependent patients. It is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach, which was carried out in a Center of Psychosocial Attention (CAPS-ad) during June and August of 2007. Data were collected by using individual interviews and 10 group meetings. Family members showed a co-dependent behavior by expressing suffering, emotional pain, physical and psychological sickness, seen on answers like: fear, lack of confidence, guilt, excessive care/control over others, lack of self care and changes in lifestyle. Group meetings showed that being a co-dependent relative involves suffering and requires professional assistance. This study was useful to promote a reflection on health intervention practices regarding chemically dependent family members. We highlight the importance of the family role since intervention practices are still too focused on drug regimens and on the patient himself.
