Abstract

In Brazil, tobacco is a frequently used drug among adolescents. Tobacco advertisement contributes considerably to spread the use of the drug and it targets basically young people. This research objective was to evaluate the effectiveness of advertisements displayed on cigarette packaging for the prevention of smoking in adolescence. It is a qualitative case study that enabled to understand, evaluate, and describe situations in which the phenomenon under study could be analysed in a concrete reality. The research subjects were elementary and secondary students at two schools in the city of Belo Horizonte - Minas Gerais. The results indicated that the images used would not be able to prevent or influence tobacco use among the participants in the research.
