Abstract

The article presents and discusses the biographical approach to places having as object of study the Pampulha Modern Ensemble, located in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Based on the biographical approach to places, the article aims to problematize and discuss the concept of cultural landscape in the field of heritage preservation. And demonstrate how society and this cultural landscape are linked, connected, and also how the meanings and values ​​were accumulated and transformed over time through the patrimonialization process. The proposal for a biographical approach of the heritage of this cultural landscape presents itself as a possibility of analysis and interpretation of the Pampulha Modern Ensemble which considers its different historical periods, values ​​and meanings. The Modern Ensemble was designed in the 1940s by architect Oscar Niemeyer and landscaper Roberto Burle Marx and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List (United Nations Organization for Science, Education and Culture) in July 2016, at Cultural Landscape typology. Cultural landscapes are composed of material and symbolic aspects, constituting the relationship between society and the environment. Such a relationship is dynamic and constantly changing. The article aims to discuss and instigate the debate about the biography of cultural landscapes, and aims to contribute to the theory and practice of heritage preservation.
