Abstract

This article is about a teaching experience in the Graduate Program in Built Environment and Sustainable Heritage at UFMG: the discipline Restoration, Rehabilitation, and Requalification of Built Heritage: Contemporary Theories and Practices. Offered to master's and doctoral students in what is one of the rare programs in Brazil aimed at the conservation of cultural and natural heritage, the discipline was designed to contribute to the generation, development, transmission, and application of knowledge specific to its theme and, in specific, for critical analysis and production of restoration, rehabilitation, and requalification design and works. In order to achieve these educational goals, the discipline adopts a set of theoretical and empirical premises that are fundamental to conservation, as well as a syllabus and teaching-learning strategies with a high degree of interdisciplinarity. Its first two thirds are dedicated to the transmission-acquisition of contents related to culture, heritage, and conservation in general, and specifically to the conservation of built heritage and its restoration, rehabilitation, and requalification. In its last third, the discipline becomes a dynamic workshop, in which these contents are applied in case studies. The article presents the premises, syllabus, and strategies of the discipline and, at the end, some of its outcomes and challenges.
