Abstract

Architectural documentation plays an essential role in preserving cultural heritage and safeguarding the memory of a collection of properties, but it is also an instrument for intervention actions. The academy has been an essential medium for producing this documentation in its related courses, contributing to preserving it through memory recovering and as the basis for legislation and interventions. This work aims to reflect upon the performance of the university, mainly the Architecture and Urbanism course of the Universidade Católica de Pelotas, through its role in architectural documentation of the architectural cultural heritage. The city of Pelotas, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, holds a significant trajectory concerning cultural heritage preservation. In this context, the course mentioned above has contributed to preserving the collection of properties due to its community character. From the integration between teaching, research, and university extension, the documentation practice made it possible to act in cases that address the different purposes of the documentation itself, with the elaboration of studies for heritage protection or support for interventions. The reflection from the experience developed has allowed the academy to combine theory with practice and approach it as a protection instrument in the documentation.
