Abstract

Ceará-Mirim is a city located in the metropolitan region, 28 kilometers from Natal/RN, northeast of Brazil. The proximity to the capital and its natural characteristics were essential for the sugarcane mills development, in the 19th century. Some remaining examples of sugarcane factories can still be found in the city, but in state of ruins. The aim of this work was to resume the history of the countryside county formation and the area of historical interest, focusing on its oldest sugarcane mill, built in 1843: the Engenho Carnaubal. Therefore, surveys and analysis of the sugarcane mills ruins, the big house and its surrounding area were carried out, so the potential for the preservation and reuse of this architectural complex has been noticed and based the development of a historical mills route, which would connect the coast to the center of the county, passing through the countryside. Then was elaborated an architectural and urban proposal with cultural uses and services for the complex.
