Abstract

The evolution of the city of Rio de Janeiro was punctuated by influences and impacts that are reflected in its history. The construction of the subway, in the 70s, and the transfer of the capital to Brasília are cases of urban intervention and economic emptying that marked the history and memory of Catete Street in a significant way. The current configuration of Catete Street is the result of the combination of preserved stretches, with buildings built on the remaining land from the demolitions and persistence of urban voids. The objective of this work is to analyze the changes in the scenario of Catete Street through narratives provided by the juxtaposition of different approaches, in order to highlight a complex current scenario and reinforce the connection between memory / physical space / uses and local practices. The research methodology is configured through the studies of narratives and the 'Palácio de Memórias' method, which will introduce Catete Street as an object of study and also as a case study, ratifying one of the main points to develop the article in question: a the need to learn from the records / memories / discourses of the past in order to make the present understand, in different scenarios of world metropolises, as well as to interpret cities.
