Research in multimodality can be characterized by its interest in determining the mechanisms and effects of combining various communicative forms in the service of meaning construction (cf. Bateman et al., 2017). Such broad characterization favors research on multimodality within frameworks that emphasize the primacy of meaning in linguistic analysis, such as cognitive approaches. Whereas traditional studies of human language have focused exclusively on verbal modality, the shift towards considering multimodal aspects of language challenges a set of foundational assumptions about the nature of language, the mechanisms of meaning construction, and the integration of different modalities (visual, verbal, etc.) in human communicative activities (cf. Cohn & Schilperoord, 2024). In a complementary direction, research in multimodality has gained momentum in the fields of computer science and computational linguistics, with the aim of developing linguistic resources for training language models, among other purposes.
In this context, this Special Issue aims to gather articles that discuss multimodality - related to Romance languages - from both cognitive and computational perspectives. We welcome submission of original research and review articles on the following topics:
- Cognitive Approaches to Multimodality
1.a. Multimodal Communication.
1.b. Multimodal Genres.
1.c. Frame Semantics and Multimodality.
1.d. Grammatical Constructions in Multimodal Texts.
- Semantic-Computational Representations for Multimodality
2.a. Construction and Evaluation of Multimodal Datasets.
2.b. Computational Applications for the Development of Resources for Subtitling, Audio Description, etc.
- Artificial Intelligence Models for Semantic Image Labeling
3.a. Models for Static Image Labeling.
3.b. Models for Dynamic Image Labeling.
Submissions related to this topic may utilize multimodal datasets already produced and made available by ReINVenTA – Research and Innovation Network for Video and Text Analysis of Multimodal Objects. The datasets can be accessed at https://huggingface.co/FrameNetBrasil.
Authors must prepare their manuscripts following the journal's guidelines and submit their texts through the online submission system: https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/caligrama/about/submissions
Submission deadline: January 31, 2025
