Kindless Alleyways of the Memory:
Spaces, urgencies and scarcities in novels by Evaristo and Ntshingila
Keywords:
space and place; displacement; suspension; scarcity; Evaristo; Ntshingila.Abstract
In this text, we look at the novels Becos da Memória (2020), by Brazilian writer Conceição Evaristo, and Do not go gentle (2016), by Futhi Ntshingila, from South Africa, and explore the relationship between characters and the spaces they occupy. The approach followed highlights the study of the ideas of suspension and scarcity, which are dear to the novels, and finds support in humanistic geography, especially in the distinction it offers for the terms space and place (TUAN, 2013; 2005), in order to apply such notions to the study of excerpts of said works of fiction. Our analysis highlights that the favela’s space-place is a determining and defining element in the lives and (im)possibilities of those who live in it, being directly related to the scarcity, urgency and suspension in the reactive way of living of the characters.
